Departure and Start Dates

Thanks to those of you who posted comments for your support and encouragement. I will update this blog as time and access to the internet permit.

We will fly out of Minneapolis to Atlanta, GA on March 3. We have reservations at the Hiker Hostel for March 3 and hope to hit the trail near Springer Mountain on March 4. Packing and last minute preparations are going well.

I’ve heard about your plan through Raul Midon’s facebook.
I hope you have a great time on your journey !
I look forward to checking on your blog and know about how things are going for you.

WOW! For many years I had planned to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada on the west coast because I lived in Phoenix, Arizona. Actually had all my trail planned with resupply stops and all. Then,
In 2001 I was diagnosed with Diabetes. I have a Medtronic Insulin Pump and somehow I got discouraged with this disease and did not go forward wondering how I would keep insulin at the right temps and how many thousands of blood sugar tests I would have to do with the physical exertion, not to mention how many carbs I was going to have to pack.
Your Courage is absolutely awesome. I believe this is the trail that “Gramma Gatewood” walked with only a knapsack at 80+ years old?
I do not have money to support you. I do have prayers and a kindred spirit and desire to hike this trail someday. I wonder if you are going to keep blogging and/or journaling as other hikers have done on their hikes?
Great reading, that of others adventures, both the positive and negative. I would love to keep track of you, your progress and your success. I moved to Ohio now, absolutely different than Arizona…LOL and absolutely forgot about the other trails. Your story gives me HOPE.
Remember, “One step at a time.”

Heard about you on the news, then met Mr. Sykes on the trail just north of Cooper Gap. He told us more of your story. I will be praying that you have a safe journey and all goes well. Wish we could have met you on the trail this past weekend, but we had to cut our trip short at Sassafrass Mountain, my knee gave out on the ice. I look forward to hearing about your trip and tracking your progress. God Bless.

Mike, I’m the editor of a weekly magazine for the blind and I stumbled upon your site and blog. I think that what you’re embarking on is inspiring, so I shared your story with our readers and encouraged them to follow you through your blog.

I wish you the best of luck and want you to know that all of the Matilda Ziegler Magazine readers are behind you.

    Take care.

You are an inspiration!!!! Our entire family wish you well on your fantastic hike. My husband and I adopted a little girl in 03 who was born with a vision impairment. She is now in the first grade and doing amazing things. She is just like a little sponge and she doesn’t miss a trick! She too has very limited vision depending on the light in the room.
Keep up the good work and I will look forward to following your steps on the trail through the posts ect.
